Swansea City Council has proposed plans to create a specialist unit for the purpose of teaching children with autism.
The news comes as 81 pupils diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are being taught in mainstream schools.
However, the local authority’s plans involve establishing units for 16 pupils each at Dunvant and Portmead primaries and Birchgrove comprehensive.
The council had launched a consultation on the plans, claiming more support was needed for autistic children as diagnosis of the condition continues to rise.
Jen Raynor, cabinet member for education, commented: "Creating these new units will have a significant impact on these pupils' wellbeing and increase their chances of reaching their full potential in life."
