Councillors, mayors are being elected across England and police and crime commissioners will be elected in England and Wales.
More than 2,500 seats are up for election across more than 100 councils.
There are mayoral elections in London and nine other metro areas in England. For the first time, mayors will be elected in the East Midlands, the North East, and York and North Yorkshire.
Constituents in Blackpool South will also be choosing an MP in a by-election. Nine candidates are fighting to replace Scott Benton, who resigned in March, after a suspension due to a lobbying row.
37 police and crime commissioners will also be elected.
Polls are open from 7am to 10pm, with results expected overnight and into Friday and Saturday.
Voters are reminded that ID is now needed to vote.
