Government launches scheme to attract renewable energy storage investment
The government has launched a new scheme to help build energy storage infrastructure.
It is hoped this will result in the first significant long duration energy storage (LDES) facilities in nearly four decades, and in turn, create back up renewable power and bolster the UK’s energy security.
The technology is like giant batteries and work by storing renewable energy and releasing it onto the grid and into homes when needed. This includes pumped storage hydro, which stores electricity by pumping water up a reservoir, to be released later.

Welsh cabinet secretary for housing and local government, Jayne Bryant, recently visited a low-carbon social housing development in Cardiff.
Taff Housing’s Cwrt Alaw is an example of both low-carbon social housing and the use of brownfield sites as part of a wider community regeneration project.
There are ten new high-quality, energy efficient one and two-bedroomed flats, with innovative technologies installed throughout, creating warmer affordable warmth for tenants.

£51 million for Birkenhead regeneration project
Homes England and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority have invested £51 million a regeneration project in Birkenhead.
The funding will be used to kick-start the regeneration of a former gasworks in Birkenhead.
Hind Street Urban Garden Village, on the Wirral, will see derelict land around Hind Street turned into a new community of over 1,500 homes, a new park, improved transport links, commercial space and leisure facilities.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is urging young people across the country to put their cyber skills to the test in the new UK Cyber Team Competition. Those involved could get the chance to represent the UK on the world stage and kickstart a career in cyber security.
The competition is open to 18 to 25-year-olds with a passion for cyber security to test their skills against challenging cyber exercises designed to push their technical expertise and problem-solving abilities.
