Councils have warned of a potential post-coronavirus surge of dental treatments following the lifting of lockdown.
New figures, from the latest NHS spending data, shows that there were 44,685 extractions of multiple teeth in under-18s in England in 2018/19 at a cost of £41.5 million. This is equal to 177 per working day, an increase of 17 per cent compared to the 38,208 extractions in 2012/13, which cost £27.4 million.

Funding to help people return home from hospital
People needing additional follow-on care after being discharged from hospital will now be supported by a £588 million fund.
The £588 million investment will cover adult social care or the immediate costs of care in their own home.
From 1 September, the NHS will be able to access the funding in order to provide up to six weeks of additional support so people can receive ongoing help with their recovery and rehabilitation after they leave hospital. This could include support in their home or access to services such as physiotherapy.

Reports launched to help councils tackle climate change
The Local Government Association has published a guide to help councils play a leading role in tackling the climate crisis at a local level.
Having worked closely with the Centre for Public Scrutiny, the LGA says that the resource will help all councils and policymakers to embed the necessary environmental, social and cultural changes that communities need to see to build resilience to respond to climate challenges such as investment strategies and transport plans.
