North East mayor plans backed by Gateshead
Gateshead Council appears set to rejoin six other local authorities in the North East working to bring an elected mayor to the region.
Gateshead had previously rejected a proposed devolution deal earlier this year due to concerns over financial settlements from Westminster, despite Durham, Northumberland, Newcastle, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside councils all voting favour.

Almost 400 refugee children living in the Calais ‘Jungle’ camp are eligible to come to the UK, campaigners have claimed.
Citizens UK will consequently urge Home Secretary Amber Rudd to accept the children, many of whom reportedly have family in Britain, one the one year anniversary of the much-publicised drowning of three-year-old Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi.
