Autumn statement due today

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is to publish his autumn statement later today.

It is expected there will be spending cuts and tax rises.

Though nothing has yet been confirmed, it is expected that the state pension and benefits will rise with prices and energy support will continue beyond April, but will not be as generous.

It is also expected that the health budget will increase in real terms.

It is anticipated that there will be a windfall tax on the energy industry to help pay for energy support.

After the fallout from Kwasi Kwarteng's mini-budget, it is not expected there will be any big surprises in the budget.

Hunt is expected to say: "We are taking difficult decisions to deliver strong public finances and help keep mortgage rates low, but our plan also protects our long-term economic growth.

"At the same time, we protect the vulnerable, because to be British is to be compassionate."
