Gove insists government will spend on Levelling Up

Michael Gove has insisted there is money to spend on ‘levelling up’ projects around the country after a warning that voters needed to see progress.

Ben Houchen, the Mayor for Tees Valley, has called for ‘visible signs’ of action if the Prime Minister wants to retain the electorate's support. The warning follows ongoing delays from the government on a white paper on the government's levelling up agenda.

But Gove, who became Levelling Up Secretary last year, insisted that his budget for levelling up was ‘significantly increased’ at the last government spending review, and the commitment to public spending was ‘higher than any government’.
