Somerset Council merger approved

Taunton Deane councillors have voted in favour of a proposal to merge with Somerset Council.

The plans include creating a joint public sector hub with Somerset Council, but were initially put on hold as a result of financial challenges.

The vote in favour of the merger followed a five-hour debate at a council meeting.

Originally the move had divided opinion, with come councillors claiming the merger would pose a threat to Taunton Deane’s powers, however many agreed the combined services would save money.

Somerset Council is set to vote on the merger in September.
