Sadiq Khan has introduced an £11 million fund to help eight London boroughs implement new measures to improve air quality in their areas.
The funding from the Mayor of London aims to tackle toxic air quality and emissions in the capital, by creating five new Low Emission Neighbourhoods.
To be set up by 2019, the neighbourhoods will implement initiatives that provide penalties for the most polluting vehicles, reserve parking for the cleanest vehicles and introduce car-free days.
The five Low Emission Neighbourhoods will be in: Westminster; Hackney, Islington and Tower Hamlets; City of London; Greenwich; and Redbridge and Newham.
Khan said: ““We need urgent and bold action and this includes targeted local initiatives to tackle some of the worst pollution hotspots in London.
“The previous Mayor committed to funding two local projects, but I don’t think this goes far enough. So I’m delighted to announce that we will now be funding five key areas across London – helping to tackle air pollution and transforming neighbourhoods.”
