May begins appointing new cabinet members

Prime Minister Theresa May has begun forming her new government, as she issues cabinet jobs to MPs, on her first day as PM.

One of May’s fist cabinet appointments included Boris Johnson, the former mayor of London and leading Brexit campaigner, who has now been named the new Foreign Fecretary.

Phillip Hammond has also been appointed as Chancellor, taking over the role from George Osborne.

Amber Rudd will take over from May’s former position as Home Secretary.

Michael Fallon will continue in his position as Defence Secretary.

David Davis has been appointed as Brexit Secretary.

Liz Truss has moved from her role as secretary for environment, food and rural affairs to replace Michael Gove as Justice Secretary.

It has been confirmed that Jeremy Hunt will remain as Health Secretary, contrary to numerous reports suggesting he may have been reappointed elsewhere on the cabinet.

Meanwhile, Nicky Morgan has been dropped as Education Secretary, with Justine Greening set to take over from the role. Greening was also appointed minister for women and equalities.

Liam Fox has taken on another newly created position as Secretary of State for International Trade.

May will continue to appoint positions in her new cabinet as the day (14 July) commences.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Theresa May commented: “The prime minister explained that we would need some time to prepare for these negotiations and spoke of her hope that these could be conducted in a constructive and positive spirit.”
