Gwynedd Council to introduce radical school shake-up

Gwynedd Council is overseeing plans to introduce a major shake-up of education in the area, with particular focus to the way in which schools are managed.

The plans will include dramatically reducing its 14 high schools to six or seven, without closing any facilities.

However many head teachers have expressed concerns that they may not have enough time to provide leadership because the majority of their time is taken up to teach lessons, due to recruitment problems and budget cuts.

Neil Foden, National Union of Teachers (NUT) chairman for Wales, said: "It's a very radical proposal. Gwynedd have to do something. The current situation isn't viable, but I think there will be areas where they will have some difficulty in getting this through and there will be areas of opposition."

Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council's portfolio holder for education, maintained: "Good leadership is the thing that improves schools the most."
