Guildford council to vote on elected mayor

Voters in Guildford are set to be polled on whether they wish to have a directly-elected mayor.

The news comes as a petition to Guildford BC calling for a referendum on an elected mayor has now reached the necessary number of signatures to trigger the poll, which is due to take place late this year.

Over 5,200 people signed the petition. Under current regulations, the poll must take place before the 24 October, with the council set to confirm the correct date shortly.

A spokesman for Guildford council said: “The role of a directly-elected mayor is different from the current ceremonial mayor of Guildford. A directly-elected mayor would have wide ranging decision-making powers.”
