Two-thirds of UK households in fuel poverty by January

New research published by the University of York has found that two-thirds of UK households could be in fuel poverty by January.

It is estimated 45 million people will struggle to pay their energy bills this winter.

Fuel poverty is defined as when energy costs exceed 10 per cent of a household's net income.

90.4 per cent of lone parents with two or more children are expected to fall into fuel poverty, along with 86.4 per cent of pensioner couples

The government has announced some measures intended to help people pay their bills, but has not proposed suspending the energy cap rise. Boris Johnson has said his successor will offer more help in the autumn, though neither candidate has set out a detailed plan.
