Scottish Government publishes workforce statistics

The Scottish Government has published its quarterly Workforce statistics.

The statistics include the numbers of workers, staff sickness rates, and the diversity of staff up to the most recent quarter ending March 2024.

The statistics reveal that at the end of March 2024, there were 8,843 full time equivalent (FTE) directly employed staff, this is an increase on last year’s figure of 8,802 (0.5 per cent) at the end of March 2023. 99.4 per cent of directly employed staff were permanent and 0.6 per cent were temporary.

There was a 22 per cent decrease in the number of non-directly employed workers from the end of March 2023 (1,659) to the end of March 2024 (1,290), a decrease of 369 workers.

The staff sickness level was an average of 8.2 working days lost per staff in the 12-month period ending March 2024. This is compared to 8.1 for the previous year. This represents a loss of 3.6% of working days in the 12 month period ending March 2024.

The statistics also reveal that 56.4 per cent of the workforce were female compared to 43.6 per cent male.
