Foreign Aid Budget to help councils house refugees

The announcement came just before Prime Minister David Cameron pledged for the UK to take up to 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years, which is likely to put added pressure on local authority resources.

The Local Government Association has called on central government to cover all costs incurred by the current migrant crisis.

LGA chairman David Simmons said: “Any support offered by councils must be on a voluntary basis where support can be adequately provided.”

He added: “Central government has to recognise that any costs associated with this international problem must be fully met by Whitehall.”
