Clark ‘impressed’ with devolution deal despite lacking mayor plans

Communities secretary Greg Clark has confirmed he is ‘impressed’ with a devolution bid for Leicester and Leicestershire which lacks proposals for a directly elected mayor.

The comment has sparked reports that Clark would be open to the idea of supporting devolution deals which did not involve having a mayoral election.

The communities secretary made the comment at the District Councils Network reception, where he said the bid was ‘a very positive proposal’.

He added: “It seems to me a very good example of where the district, county and unitary have been working together for some time, proposed something that actually doesn’t make huge demands in terms of devolved powers from secretaries of state but reflects a desire to work together.”
