Hackney Council announces new cabinet member

Mayor Woodley has announced councillor Sarah Young as Hackney Council’s new cabinet member for climate, environment and transport.

Councillor Young, who has represented Woodberry Down ward since 2021 and lived in Hackney most of her life, replaces Mete Coban, who stepped down in July following his appointment as the Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy.

She said that Hackney is "at the forefront of the fight against climate change and in working for cleaner air, a greener borough and sustainable transport for our residents."

Young addedL "I am very much looking forward to continuing to deliver on our Climate Action Plan and working with the people of Hackney to make sure that we all benefit."

Her role will include leading on the Council’s net zero commitments including delivering the ambitious Climate Action Plan, expanding the pioneering Community Energy Fund and pressing ahead with schemes to lower traffic, reduce flood risk and increase greening.

Woodley said: "I’m delighted to appoint Sarah to the Council’s Cabinet.

"As well as a determined advocate for Hackney and its communities, she has a wealth of professional experience in environmental sustainability, from green energy to retrofit strategies.

"Hackney has long been a leader in the response to the climate emergency, and I’ve no doubt that Sarah will bring fresh eyes, energy and expertise to continue that mission."
