£2m scheme for eco-homes in South Shields

South Tyneside Council is building 20 two-bedroomed eco-friendly bungalows in the Horsley Hill area of South Shields.

The £2m scheme will see the homes meet the governments Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 rating, which means that the homes require less energy to construct, heat and run.

The bungalows are being built with more than £1m of investment from the Council and a £803,000 social housing grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.

The new bungalows will be built by Frank Haslam Milan and managed by South Tyneside Homes.

Council Leader, Councillor Iain Malcolm, said: "This development will be a real asset for the whole area and the bungalows will set a new standard for green living in South Tyneside."

"They have been designed primarily for over-60s who need ground-floor accommodation and will have energy-efficiency measures bringing lower fuel bills which is good news for the people who will live there and excellent news for the community as a whole."
