Councils urged to prevent potholes
The Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) are urging local councils to carry out necessary road maintenance to prevent pothole recurrences in the winter.
The RSTA points out the ability to carry out road surfacing maintenance is often dependent upon prevailing weather conditions and that the summer through to early autumn provides the best time to undertake works.
Planned road maintenance costs also cost considerably less than emergency pothole repair.
Howard Robinson, RSTA chief executive said: "Proper long-term maintenance offers far better value than short-term repairs. It costs only £2m to surface dress and maintain a road but costs £75m to repair potholes."
"Hoping that the road will last through the winter and then be faced with hefty pothole repair bills make no economic sense."
