Northern Ireland set for election

Northern Ireland is set to have an assembly election after the deadline for restoring a devolved government was missed.

Northern Ireland secretary Chris Heaton-Harris now must call an election to be held in the next 12 weeks. He has said he will do that on Friday, with the plan set to be laid out later today.

Power-sharing has not been restored, due to a DUP protest against the Northern Ireland Protocol. The DUP claim that the protocol undermines Northern Ireland's position in the UK.

In February, the DUP withdrew from the executive. Ministers remained in post with limited powers. Under the power-sharing agreement, the executive is made up of ministers from the largest parties.

At midnight, the caretaker ministers were removed from office with senior civil servants now in charge.

The assembly has also been dissolved.

The election is likely to be on 15 December, though this is not yet confirmed.
