Sir Ed Davey becomes new Liberal Democrat leader

Sir Ed Davey has won the race to become the new leader of the Liberal Democrats, having secured 63.5 per vent of the vote against fellow MP Layla Moran.

Davey has been acting leader of the party since Jo Swinson stepped down following the 2019 General Election, in which the then party leader lost her seat.

At an event in London, Davey said it was time for the party to ‘wake up and smell the coffee’ after only securing 12 per cent of the vote in the last General Election. This would involve, he said, rebuilding the Liberal Democrats to ‘national relevance’.

Davey is the MP for Kingston and Surbiton, having served them from 1997 until 2015 when he lost his seat. He then won a snap election in 2017 to regain the seat.
