The Department for Education has said it will work with a small number of local authorities to establish Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs), as part of a new 'test and learn' exercise.
This forms part of the DfE's plans for moving all schools into strong academy trusts by 2030.
Local authorities (LAs) in England are being invited to register their interest in establishing a multi-academy trust (MAT) and is looking for a broad mix of which reflect the geographic diversity of the country and a mix of school types and phases.
The aim is for the 'test and learn' method to allow the department to evolve its approach over time and to inform future policy development.
The DfE's guidance on the matter says: "We want to move to a unified system, where all schools are enabled to benefit from the support of a strong academy trust. We know that many maintained schools value the support of their LA and would like to continue to work closely with it. Thus far, LAs have not been permitted to establish MATs. The Schools White Paper has signalled that this will now change, in areas where too few strong trusts exist."
