New PM by next Friday

Following the resignation of Liz Truss, the new prime minister will be announced by next Friday.

A Conservative leadership contest will be held and the winner will become the fifth prime minister in six years.

Conservative MPs are now able to nominate who they would like to be the next prime minister, and candidates will need at least 100 nominations to compete. This means only 3 candidates will be able to progress, as there are 357 Conservative MPs. Nominations will close at 2 pm on Monday.

If only one person gets 100 nominations, they will become prime minister.

If more than one person gets 100 nominations, Conservative MPs will hold a ballot between 15.30 and 17.30 on Monday. If there are two candidates, MPs will hold an indicative vote. If there are three candidates, the one receiving the lowest number of votes will be eliminated and then an indicative vote will be held the same day for the remaining two.

If no one withdraws, and there are two candidates left, party members will take part in an online vote.

The winner will be announced by Friday 28 October.
