The beaches receiving international Blue Flag and Seaside Awards have been announced, as research finds that two thirds of parents are given the confidence that a beach is a clean, safe place for their children, thanks to the Keep Britain Tidy awards.
This year, over 98 per cent of bathing waters reached safe standards and 92 per cent of achieved 'excellent' or 'good' water quality standards. In total, 148 beaches were awarded for their excellence, with 65 Blue Flags presented and 125 Seaside Awards. This means that 42 beaches hold both awards.
Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of the charity, said: “Keep Britain Tidy leads the fight for clean, plastic-free beaches. We are committed to creating a great environment on our doorstep for everyone to enjoy and offering a quality mark that shows everyone just how fantastic our beaches can be. Blue Flag and Seaside Awards set the standard for our beaches. It’s brilliant to see so many beaches winning Blue Flag and Seaside Award status this year, thanks to dedication and hard work of beach staff and volunteers who work tireless to maintain the high standards.”
