A new National Cyber Advisory board has met to discuss how to promote and protect the UK's interests in cyberspace. They also discussed how to combat cyber threats.
The meeting was co-chaired by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Oliver Dowden, and Chief Information Officer at Lloyds Banking Group, Sharon Barber.
The Board aims to make the UK more secure and resilient against evolving threats, and protect the public against crime, fraud and hostile state threats. The board will meet every quarter.
According to recent statistics, in the 12 months to March 2022, there were 2.7 million cyber-related frauds to individuals and businesses. According to the figures, the UK is the third most targeted country for cyber attacks, behind the USA and Ukraine.
The Board will work with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The NCSC runs training for businesses, consumers and government to build cyber resilience, as well as running campaigns.
A Cyber Aware campaign will be launched by the NCSC and the City of London Police later this month, which aims to help people reduce the risk of cyber fraud for shoppers in the period before Christmas.
Dowden, said: "Protecting and promoting the UK’s interests in cyberspace cannot be achieved in isolation, it must be a shared endeavour between government and all parts of the economy and society. We have seen how cyber attacks are increasing, putting the UK and our businesses and services on the frontline of global threats.
"That’s why this new National Cyber Advisory Board is so important, bringing leaders from across industry, the third sector and academia to share information and expertise on how to build and protect our digital economy and services."
