John Swinney has been elected unopposed as leader of the SNP.

He will become the seventh first minister of Scotland and the fourth from the SNP.

A leadership contest was triggered after Humza Yousaf stepped down over the axing of climate change goals and the collapse of a power-sharing agreement with the greens.

Swinney will be leading a minority government after the end of the agreement.

This is the second time Swinney has been elected leader of the SNP - the first time however, the party was not in power.

He has served a senior minister for 1 years, and what deputy first minister under Nicola Sturgeon.

In his acceptance speech, Swinney said: "Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our party’s history – a chapter that will be about coming together, uniting and dedicating ourselves to the service of Scotland.

"I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the many Party members, and the many Elected Members, at Westminster and Holyrood, and in our Councils, for their encouragement to me to stand for the Party leadership.

"My decision to stand is not borne out of long-held ambition, but rather a profound sense of duty to my Party and my country."
