Welsh Government announces funding to tackle food poverty

The Welsh Government has announced a further £1 million to tackle food poverty.

The funding aims to help community food organisations to overcome barriers to accessing sufficient supplies and help them buy food, baby products, period products, cleaning products and other essentials.

Baby banks, clothes banks and uniform banks will also be supported with the funding.

The funding will also be spent on initiatives that help families save money on food, including cooking sessions.

Jane Hutt, minister for social justice said: "As energy prices continue to rise and people struggle with the impact of rising inflation on their household income, local authorities, food banks and community support groups across Wales are reporting a rise in the number of people accessing food banks and other community food provision. In some areas, organisations have experienced more than 100% increase in demand for emergency food. At the same time, as a result of the cost of living crisis, organisations have experienced a drop in donations."

The funding will be distributed over the coming weeks through Welsh local authorities. Organisations seeking funding are asked to contact their local authority.
