Lib Dems win two seats in local byelections

The Liberal Democrats have been victorious in two wards of Gloucester Borough Council in the latest local polls.

The party, under the new leadership of Jo Swinson, defeated the Conservatives in a byelection in Barnwood ward, securing 676 votes on a turnout just below 30 per cent. The Lib Dems also narrowly won a seat from Labour in a contest in Podsmead ward caused by the resignation of a Labour councillor.

Noticeably Nigel Farage’s Brexit party failed to win council seats in its first attempt at fielding candidates in local byelections, after topping the vote in the European parliament elections in the UK on 23 May.

In Hartlepool Borough Council, Labour narrowly won a seat in Hart ward following the resignation of an independent councillor previously elected for Labour.
