Approximately 6,000 children in Glasgow could benefit from a plan by Glasgow City Council to provide free school dinners for all children in Primary 4.
Believed to be the first time a Scottish council has looked at significantly extending automatic entitlement to free meals, the proposal, to be discussed by the council in its budget plans, follows a pilot scheme by North Lanarkshire Council to provide free meals for all eligible children 365 days a year.
Since 2015, children in primaries 1, 2 and 3 have been entitled to a free meal. Glasgow does not currently plan to copy North Lanarkshire's initiative but is looking at providing meals during school holidays for those from low-income families to help ensure there is no stigma and can help a child's health and education.
