Cameron quits role as MP

A by-election will take place in the Oxfordshire seat of Witney, after former Prime Minister David Cameron announced he is stepping down.

Having represented the constituency since 2001, Cameron highlighted the fact that he did want to be a ‘distraction and a big diversion’ for new Prime Minister Theresa May as a prominent reason for his decision.

Dismissing rumours that his decision had been triggered by May’s new grammar school policies, which Cameron opposed, the former Prime Minister said that he hoped his tenure would be recalled for a strong economy and ‘important social reforms’, rather than being the leader who oversaw the country leave the European Union, the event that caused him to leave Downing Street in July.

Cameron has stated that he aims to continue to contribute to public life, but has not made any ‘firm decisions’.
