Hampshire launches local government consultation

Hampshire County Council has launched a consultation on the possible reorganisation of its local government structure, following recent debate.

The consultation, which will run for eight weeks, is ‘leaving all options open’ to residents, who will be able to share their views on whether they would like an elected mayor, a county split of if they are happy with the current structure.

The announcement comes as Hampshire County Council decided to reject a role in a combined authority for the Solent area, backed by Portsmouth and Southampton City Councils. Despite it being worth an extra estimated £30 million a year in government funding, Hampshire preferred a new unitary authority route.

Roy Perry, leader of Hampshire County Council, said: “Hampshire County Council is leaving all options open to Hampshire residents, equipped with the pros and cons of potential ways councils could change going forward.”
