LGA names diabetes as ‘fastest growing health challenge’

The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned that new figures suggest diabetes has become one of the fastest growing challenges the UK is facing.

The comment comes as charity Diabetes UK has released a report citing figures which suggest the NHS spends around £10 billion annually in order to tackle the disease.

The study, entitled State of the Nation 2016: Time to take control of diabetes, warned that five million people in England are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and that people who already have the disease are twice at risk of developing various cardiovascular illnesses.

The data also found there were over 7,000 diabetes related amputations every year in England.

Commenting on the new analysis, councillr Izzi Seccombe of the (LGA) warned: “If we are to curb this growing health crisis and see a reduction in the number of people dying from diabetes and its complications, we need to increase awareness of the risks, bring about wholesale changes in lifestyle, improve self-management among people with diabetes and improve access to integrated diabetes care services.

“By working together to increase awareness and provide appropriate education for anyone involved in diabetes care we can improve quality of life for those with diabetes.”
