A YouGov poll commissioned by the Times has found that 31 per cent of ABC1 workers will need to borrow to pay an unexpected bill of £500.
The figure was higher for manual workers and the unemployed, with 46 pr cent having to resort to credit to pay such a bill.
The poll questioned 1,648 adults across the UK on 16 and 17 of May. The findings suggested that 14 per cent would be unable to pay a bill of just £100 without borrowing. It found that women were less likely to have savings than meant, while almost half of those aged 18-24 would be unable to pay a £500 bill, compared to 23 per cent of those aged over 65.
According to the Money Advice Service, 40 per cent of UK adults have no more than £500 in savings, while 28 per cent had no savings at all.
