Unison has announced that it will accept a two-year pay deal for local authority workers, following a meeting of local government representatives across the union.
The move makes Unison the second union to accept the proposal made by the Local Government Association’s National Employers group, following GMB who had already agreed to the terms.
The new contract will see a one per cent rise for most council workers, while some of the lowest paid workers will receive rises up to six percent, which will reflect new pay rules as part of the National Living Wage.
Unison had initially rejected the terms along with Unite, who has not announced a change of position.
Heather Wakefield, head of local government at Unison, said: “Having talked to members in local government across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we’ve decided that there are to be no further consultations and we have agreed to accept the employers’ pay offer for 2016/18.”
