According to figures published by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the number of planning permissions reached an eight-year high of 253,000 in 2015.
Construction analyst Glenigan found that in 2015 six per cent more homes were granted planning permission compared to the previous year, making it the busiest year since 2007.
Furthermore, the proportion of major applications processed quickly by local authorities also achieved a record high at 81 per cent. Nonetheless, the figures show that new housing starts totalled 143,560 last year which is still 19 per cent lower than the rate of new starts in 2007.
Commenting on the data, Brandon Lewis, Minister of State for Housing and Planning, said: “Today’s figures are further good news for hard-working families and first-time buyers wanting to achieve their dream of home ownership with constructions rates up and plenty of homes in the pipeline.”
