Commitment to devolution reaffirmed in Queen’s speech

The government’s commitment to increased devolution of powers to local areas, including the Northern Powerhouse, was included in the Queen’s Speech.

Addressing MPs and Peers at the state opening of parliament, the Queen said: “To spread economic prosperity, my government will continue to support the development of a Northern Powerhouse.”

The Queen went on to say that further powers would be devolved across England, including more powers over local bus services, along with an increase in directly elected mayors.

The speech also included further confirmation that local authorities will be able to retain business rates ‘giving them more freedom to invest in local communities’.

Additionally, the speech also touched on the governments’s pledge to ‘support aspiration and promote home ownership’ through its commitment to build one million more homes.
