Eluned Morgan has been confirmed as Wales’ new first minister – the first woman to hold the position.
The Senedd was recalled from its summer break to nominate her, after Vaughan Gething resigned.
She has served in the Cabinets of three first ministers since first being elected to the Senedd to represent Mid and West Wales in 2016.
Morgan has served as Wales’ Health Secretary since 2021 until her appointment as first minister today.
She said: "It’s our job in government to provide everyone with the opportunity to fulfil their potential. This is based on the deep belief I have - that the success of one leads to the success of many."
She became leader of Welsh Labour last month, after being elected unopposed, and has been health minister since May 2021.
On Tuesday in the Senedd, after being nominated by Gething, she was backed by 28 MSs, Conservative Andrew RT Davies received 15 votes and Plaid Cymru's Rhun ap Iorwerth 12. The only Liberal Democrat, Jane Dodds, abstained.
Morgan's name was then sent to the King who gave his approval, allowing the new first minister to officially take office.
John Swinney, Scotland's first minister, said: “Eluned’s appointment as the first female First Minister of the Welsh Government is a historic moment for Wales.
“I have no doubt she will lead her government with passion and determination, steadfastly standing up for the people of Wales.
“I look forward to working together with her on common challenges and building on the strong relationship between Scotland and Wales."
