Standardised highway procurement documents released

The new documents remove the need to draw up individual bespoke tenders and provide a standardisation of pricing, which is estimated to save clients and private contractors up to £150,000 at the tender and procurement stage, as well as ongoing savings throughout the maintenance contract.

In addition to an updated standard form of contract, the new documents also include a price list of approximately 2,000 items often used by local authorities and guidance on what to use, how and when.

The updated procurement practice also introduces a ‘kilometre rule’, which aims to increase efficiency by ensuring works teams take into account proximity when planning different jobs.
