Torbay Council partner May Gurney to help improve recycling services

Torbay Council will partner infrastructure services company May Gurney for a new Joint Venture Company (JVC) to improve the delivery of waste collections and frontline services.

Services to be delivered by the new public/private partnership will include waste and recycling collections, the maintenance of grounds, parks, car parks, buildings and the council’s vehicle fleet, street and beach cleansing and out of hours call centre support.

The new JVC will be responsible for about 330 staff, rising to 400 in the summer, 230 vehicles, 250 items of plant, the maintenance and cleansing of more than 300 miles of roads, the collection of 61,500 bins each week, and the handling of 70,000 tonnes of waste each year.

The project is designed to improve services and offer increased opportunities locally for the business community, including a significant improvement in recycling rates and a reduction in waste going to landfill and an improved Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Paignton.

Services contracts will initially be for ten years with the possibility of Torbay Council granting five-year extensions up to a maximum term of 25 years.

Cabinet Member Councillor Dave Butt, said: "This new company will not just improve services for residents in Torbay, but it will also create new jobs, save at least £10 million pounds over the next ten years and will improve prospects for Torbay’s economy."
