Anti-begging posters from Nottingham City Council banned

Posters published for Nottingham City Council – which said that giving money to beggars would be used on drugs, alcohol or fraud – have been banned for reinforcing negative stereotypes.

The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) said they portrayed all beggars as disingenuous and were likely to cause offence.

More than 2,000 people signed a petition criticising the council for negatively portraying the homeless with the messages like: 'begging: watch your money go to a fraud' and 'watch your money go up in smoke.'

The council said it might appeal against the decision.
