Worcestershire pupils taught flood awareness

The Environment Agency (EA) and Duckworth Worcestershire Trust have joined together to provide free flood awareness sessions for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils at Worcester schools where flooding is likely.

The Flood Risk Team has worked with the Education and Information Officer at DWT to develop maps, advice and teaching material which DWT will be using in lessons. The one-hour sessions look at where flooding is likely to happen and what the public should do if it does.

This is part of a wider Flood Awareness Campaign targeting at risk areas in and around Worcestershire.

Over 800 more properties, with a landline, that are at risk of river flooding, will now receive the warning, which means over 2,000 properties in the county will now receive an alert when there is a risk of flooding.

A door knocking campaign and drop-in sessions targeting homes at risk will follow later in May. This will provide the public with an opportunity to find out if they are prepared for flooding and ask any questions they may have.

Laura Chapman, Education and Information Officer from the Trust said: "Providing this simple information and getting the children to think about the risk of floods is vital. It also encourages children to respect nature and the power it has."
