New British Standard for improving quality of life

Friday, 20 January 2012 10:26

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has launched new guidance to help improve the quality of life for communities.

Based on existing standards, BS 8904, guidance for community sustainable development aims to enhance social cohesion and inclusiveness, lessen environmental impacts and strengthen local economies.

Representatives from local councils, the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Department for Environment and Rural Affairs helped develop the product along with planners, community-building bodies, the NHS and academic experts.

According to Professor David Jackman, chairman for the sustainable communities committee, the recognition that communities can drive progress represents a 'radical departure' for BSI.
