New taskforce to help people with learning disabilities access apprenticeships

The government has launched a new taskforce aimed at supporting more people with learning disabilities access apprenticeships.

The taskforce has been created by the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and the Department for Education and comes as part of the government’s plans to create three million apprenticeships by 2020, as well as halve the disability employment gap.

It will be led by Paul Maynard MP and include employers, training providers, charities and educational experts. The Taskforce will meet three times throughout May and June to identify the issues, explore solutions and form recommendations to make to ministers

Skills Minister Nick Boles said: “Our commitment to apprenticeships is giving people everywhere the chance to develop vital skills while working in a real job and being paid. This taskforce will focus on how apprenticeships can be more accessible to people with learning disabilities so everyone can be part of the apprenticeships success story.”
