£2 billion boost confirmed for council housing

As expected, the Conservative Party Conference unveiled a further £2 billion investment for council and housing association homes.

Bringing the affordable housing fund up to £9 billion, the funding follows recent announcements on supporting tenants in the private rented sector and on extending Help to Buy.

To continue with government plans to create a stable financial environment, Whitehall is setting a long term rent deal for councils and housing associations in England. Increases to social housing rents will be limited to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) plus one per cent for five years from 2020, enabling ascertain degree of security and certainty to social tenants, councils and housing associations.
