£3.6 million to convert Camden estates into new homes
Holly Lodge and Chester Balmore estates to be transformed.

Housing Minister John Healey has announced that Camden Council has been awarded £3.6 million to support regeneration work on some of the borough’s estates, including bringing tenants’ homes up to the decent homes standard.

The money will be split between the Holly Lodge estate and the Chester Balmore estate. The Holly Lodge estate currently houses 215 mainly empty bedsits. Work to convert the estate into new homes will begin in April with phase one of the project, which will see bedsits converted into 15 new high quality one and two bed affordable homes.

Camden Council are working with residents on the design of the homes, to ensure that they meet residents’ needs, are environmentally sustainable and energy efficient.

Chester Balmore estate, which currently houses 25 properties in poor condition, will have its existing homes demolished and rebuilt and 28 additional new homes created. The plans also include new retail space and community facilities to contribute to a thriving and sustainable community.

The Council’s plans to regenerate the two estates involves working with communities to develop a vision for their area, directly addressing local housing needs, helping people into work and improving public health. They are aiming to secure further investment to convert homes, deliver decent homes improvements, relieve overcrowding and bring empty homes back into use.

Councillor Chris Naylor, Executive Member for Homes and Housing Strategy, Camden Council, said: "We welcome this funding, which will support our work to regenerate estates and bring tenants’ homes up to the decent homes standard."

"I'm delighted we're now able to start work on new flats to replace these outdated bedsits, some of which have been lying empty and uninhabitable for ten years or more."
