The floods of 2007 shocked and devastated vast areas of the UK, costing thirteen people their lives and £3.2 billion pounds to the economy. Floods such as this, have fuelled the UK government to rethink its approach on flood protection. The average annual cost of flood damage could rise by 60% by 2035, warns the EA. It says, investment in defences must be doubled to £1 billion a year by this date to protect against the rising waters. The question is, can the existing flood protection solutions hold up against these ever-increasing threats?

The flood protection market is dominated by products that rely upon concrete. Whether this is concrete for the barrier itself or for the foundations holding the solution in place. Any product not reliant on concrete seems to only be able to offer flood protection against low floods, while allowing for a degree of leakage. As a result of climate change the effects of flooding are only expected to rise, surely there is a better way of protecting against these floods than relying upon cement, a huge source of greenhouse gases and so a large contributor to climate change.

A superior build quality provides a system to flooding and storage with minimal leakage. Unlike other systems, the Neptune system is able to easily deal with undulations in the ground with negligible leakage. While also preventing ground seepage, a problem that has previously required a concrete solution.
